Frequently Asked Questions

         Email, Mailing Lists and Newsletters

  • What is a mailing list?
    • Mailing lists provide a way for websites, which have a large number of registered visitors, to use a single email address to reach large numbers of people. For instance, imagine a realtor who has 100s of email addresses that have been collected over the years. The realtor could easily set up a mailing list, for instance called my_customers@talkspot.com. An email sent to this address would be forwarded to all customers at once. This can be thought of as spam, although there are definitely legitimate uses. For instance, in this case, if the realtor had a sign-up sheet where potential customers ASK to receive email notification about future properties coming on the market, then this is a win-win for both parties. Other common uses of mailing lists on Talkspot include bands alerting fans of coming gigs, homeowners associations sending out materials to homeowners, and all sorts of newsletters ranging from motorcycles to boats.

  • How do I set up a mailing list?
    • Go to the Admin Menu, and click on Mailing Lists, then Manage Mailing Lists.

  • How do I limit who can be on my mailing list?
    • Mailing lists can be setup that cause email to be sent to all visitors who register on your website, or we can limit recipients of emails to individual groups.

Read more about groups  in the security section of this FAQ.

For instance, you may have established groups for your company website, such as Employees, and Customers, and have three different mailing lists; one that sends mail to your employees, one to send mail to customers, and another for when you want to email EVERYONE.

  • Can I have my own email address?
    • It is not possible to have your own email address on talkspot, unless you setup your own domain name. For information about setting up your own domain name, look in the section on the left called "website address". Once you have set up your own domain name, write to the system administrator, at admin@talkspot.com for information on setting up email.

  • Can I offer email addresses to visitors to my site?
    • Yes, but, only if you have your own domain name (not a website address that ends with .talkspot.com.
